About our foodbank
Since it started in late 2011 the foodbank in County Durham has grown rapidly both in its coverage of the County and the numbers fed.
In the first 12 months 3,209 were fed. In 2013 the figure was 11,684 and the numbers kept rising. Today we feed almost 2,000 people a month.
We never forget that each person is an individual not a statistic, which is why we spend time listening to their story and trying to signpost them to the most appropriate help to resolve their current crisis. We are also assisting in research on the reasons for the growth and need for foodbanks nationally. Increasingly we are trying to add money advice and other services to our foodbank distribution points as, although food in a crisis is important, people who come to foodbanks often have many other difficulties impacting their lives and we want to see appropriate support available.
The impact of the foodbank is not limited to those who receive food. It also has mobilised a wonderful group of volunteers (over 400) and thousands of amazingly generous donors without whom none of this would be possible.
